The Rosharon Volunteer Fire Department began in the early 1940's with
community members getting together with Brazoria County officials and
acquiring the first fire apparatus for the community. The all
volunteer group organized officially in 1956 and incorporated as the
Rosharon Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. a Texas not for profit
corporation in 1986. From the early 1940's through 2004 the
Rosharon Volunteer Fire Department was entirely supported through
fundraising events, private donations and a small contribution from
Brazoria County.
The county also provided one Pumper unit at county expense for the
department. These units remained in service for 15 or 20
years and were replaced. All other vehicles and equipment such as
tankers, equipment and brush trucks, air packs, hoses, nozzles, etc.
utilized by RVFD over the years have been as a result of private
donation and fundraising. This includes all funds for operations
and equipment.
In 2002, the generous taxpayers of our area approved the formation of
the Brazoria County Emergency Services District #3, which provides fire
and emergency medical services in the area some supplemental funding and
equipment. This led to the 2006 acquisition of new firefighting
equipment for RVFD. See more on our
equipment page
Since the beginning, RVFD has been operated by community members
volunteering their time to serve others. Even today, the
department has no paid staff members and is entirely operated by
volunteers. People from all walks of life give of themselves in
time and dedication to serve and protect their community. New
volunteers are always welcome, if you think you can give some of your
time to help RVFD see our volunteer
page.
In the early years notifying volunteers and community members of a
need for fire services was handled through blowing a large siren that
could be heard for miles in all directions. That old siren now
sits atop a pole behind our new fire station and can still be used if
needed for emergency notification to the community and it blows every
Tuesday night at 7:00 when our department meeting begins.
From the siren to today where have 911 and emergency calls arriving
at a dispatch center at the Brazoria County Sheriff's office. Most
areas of the county have enhanced 911 capability showing your name and
address when the call is answered. If the emergency is in our
service area, the sheriff then signals us through a special radio paging
system so all members are notified simultaneously and can respond
immediately. |
